As the husband of Alberta Mechley's twelfth child, Teri, I saw the works of this devoted lady for seventeen years. Mom related the stories of her childhood, growing up poor and sometimes hungry while living in Over The Rhine. She never forgot her humble beginnings and devoted her later life as "The Begging Lady" to helping feed and clothe the physically poor as well as the spiritually and mentally poor. As a result Christmas for Jesus’ Poor was born. She was an inspiration to me. Her commitment to family and friends was an example to all.
I believe the works she started over thirty years ago must not end with her physical death but must continue, as she would have wanted. Her spiritual life continues in all of us. We must work to make a difference in the lives of the poor and forgotten. We cannot forget those who are hungry, ill clothed, and mentally incapable of caring for themselves. There are many families, mothers with babies and small children, who don't know where their next meal is coming from much less the bare necessities that we take for granted.
